An Hour of Learning - An Infographic

The True Cost of 1 Hour of Learning - Infographic
Leanforward – eLearning Solutions

LeanForward,  a custom elearning development company, did all the research for this infographic. I for one am simply amazed at how much time and money goes into elearning. I personally have always felt that it is easier for me to learn if I have someone I can ask questions, and interact with .

I understand that even e-learning courses offer online chat rooms so you can interact with other classmates, and to ask questions and clarify any problems you may have. I prefer having a flesh-and-blood person to interact with but I have considered e-learning courses. At the moment I am following an online e-learning photography course so I can learn how to use my new Cannon Rebel camera. While the classes are well thought out, and easy to follow, it doesn't replace having a human to talk to. I like e-learning courses that offer a phone number so you can call and talk to someone real.

While I do believe that e-learning courses are a valuable learning tool, I believe they are more valuable if they have an option for students to interact with each other, or a teacher. The greatest advantage is that E-learning courses are forever. Their content never changes so you are guaranteed to learn the same material as the last student that used the course. Instructor led training changes. The instructor can focus on what the class as a whole needs, as well as the needs of each individual student. I don't feel e-learning can do this.

I guess, I feel like it depends on the student as to which would be a better path to follow. Each person is different, as are the methods.

Tips for Spring Cleaning

Yes, Spring is in the air. Trees are budding out, the flowers are starting to pop up out in the back pasture, and the birds are flying everywhere. I'm waiting for my car to be covered in a dusting of yellow pollen when I walk out to get into it. It happens. Spring. Every year.

Every year I slowly but surely go through the house, room by room, wiping, dusting, boxing, and cleaning. Why? Because for some reason, once the days turn warm and the nights are still cool, I throw open the windows to let in all that wonderful fresh air. It's like the world is new again, and it makes me want everything in the house to be new again too, or at least as clean as new.

So, what are my 5 most important tips?
  • Do not clean out a room when the children or spouse are around. - They tend to want to keep everything.
  • Nothing Goes Untouched - I move everything out of the room. Then I go through all of it, piece by piece.
  • Have your boxes ready - One for 'giveaway', one for garage sale, one for trash.
  • Take the trash out, and the donations to the drop box, as soon as the box is full - This keeps you from going through it again to 'rescue' anything.
  • Never throw out anything you can sell.
That last rule is a tough one. Especially if you have boxes and boxes of CD's, DVD's, and games. I know you have a lot that you think no one will want. I mean, how many people in your neighborhood will want those old Barney DVD's? You'd be lucky if someone wanted to give you a dime for each at a garage sale. NO! Don't throw them out! You can still get cash for them! I told you about Music Magpie in the UK a few weeks ago, remember? Well they are in the U.S. too!! Music Magpie will give you cash for your CD's, DVD's, and games. Quick and easy, just enter the barcode on their site, or use their phone app that scans the barcode to make it even easier! You know immediately how much money you will get. They send you the envelope to send your items to them, and you receive a check for all your items.

Now, I just have to curb my garage sale addiction until I have one of my own and get rid of some of the stuff I've bought in the past... hehehe.

What's Your Least Favorite Chore?

 photo 20130303_151200.jpg

Yes, that is a pile of laundry. I have been so busy this weekend that I haven't had time to do the laundry. When I got up this morning, I quickly put a load of whites in, but this is the pile I had left. Have you ever read the story of the Elves and the Shoemaker?

In the story, the honest shoemaker worked really hard, but soon was close to bankruptcy. He had enough leather to make one last pair of shoes, so he cut out the pattern and left it for the next day. That night the elves made the leather into shoes. These shoes were so nice that the customer paid more than usual for them. This happened night after night, until one night the shoemaker decided to wait up to see who was making the shoes. He and his wife watched as little elves worked diligently to make the shoes the shoemaker had cut the leather for that evening. The next morning the Shoemaker and his wife talked about the little elves and decided they should be rewarded for their hard work. The Shoemaker's wife made them all shirts and trousers, so they wouldn't have to work half naked any more. That night the Shoemaker and his wife watched as the elves discovered their new clothes and quickly dressed themselves. They were all so happy they started dancing, and danced right out into the night, never to be seen by the Shoemaker and his wife again. It was all fine though, because the shoemaker was now well on his way and he and his wife lived well ever after.

Sigh. Some days I wish I had little elves to come in and do my laundry, and dishes, or maybe even just leave me with a new washer and dryer. I wouldn't expect them to vacuum though, because then they would wake up everyone in the house! LOL! So, no little elves to help with the housework, but I did have some luck with a fairy! The Fairy Hobmother visited me, and left me a wonderful Amazon Gift Card so I can purchase more laundry detergent! If you are a blogger, and leave a comment below, there is a chance you will also receive a visit from the Fairy Hobmother!

Time For Spring Cleaning and Recycling!

Yep. Spring is very close. I can tell because I've had to start taking my allergy medication already. That's ok though, because when the weather is still kind of cool like this, but not really cold, that's the best time to throw open the windows and start deep cleaning!

I know. I hate to clean too, but this weather makes it easier on me. It seems to make a difference on everyone because my donkeys and cows are kicking up their heels and chasing each other through the pasture now too! I don't mind doing all that deep cleaning when I can open windows and doors and let the sunshine in, and all the stale winter air out of the house. I've already started by clearing out our craft room/office. It needed it too! I still need to do a little re-organizing in there, but it looks a lot better than it did!!

My next big undertaking is going through all our old cd's, DVD's, and games. I know there are some that no one even cares about any more. If I lived in the UK I would sell all of the unwanted items to Music Magpie. At least then I would know someone would make good use of them. Did you know with Music Magpie you can even sell old Nintendo DS? I guess since I'm here, I'll just have to see if I can unload them at a garage sale!

Right after I finish with all our media, I guess I'll have to start on the kitchen. There are things in those cabinets that I've had for years. What? Yes, I did go through them last year, but I think I kept more then than I will keep this year. I'm gearing up for the big garage sale I should have had last year, and I'm hoping to make enough money to take some kind of vacation this summer. Hmmm... maybe I should start on the closets instead of the kitchen....

Great Vistaprint Coupons & Deals!

I'm sure you can tell just from Fridays on the Farm posts that I love to take pictures. My camera stays with me at all times, and you never know when I'm going to pull it out of my purse and click off a few hundred pics. I tend to download pics several times a week because I don't like to have over 400 on there. I guess I'm just too impatient to fill up a whole SD card with pictures, even though I have several SD cards. I imagine I would if I went on vacation. I doubt I'd want to take time to download them every night if I was in some tropical paradise! I'd be way to busy enjoying the sun and surf! I'm sure I'd fill up a few SD cards then!

Spending time with my grandkids can fill up an SD card really fast. I just don't want to miss anything. When my kids were small it was too expensive to buy film and take pictures willy-nilly. It also cost money to have that film developed. Now you just go home and print them off, with the only expenses being photo paper and ink for your printer - unless you want those pictures on something special, like a mug, or a t-shirt. That's when someplace like Vistaprint can make a huge difference. However, that's also when the big expense begins.

I've found a way to get great deals on Vistaprint Products! Vistaprint Deals has coupons and coupon codes for everything you can find on Vistaprint. From t-shirts and long sleeved t-shirts to checks, and calendars. If you have a small business this can make a huge difference on your bottom line. Advertising doesn't have to be expensive if you use Vistaprint Deals. I've used Vistaprint. If you do anything online, I'm sure you've seen their banners. They have some of the best prices out there, but Vistaprint Deals can get you even better deals and prices with their coupons and codes. C'mon! You know you need more checks!

This is a sponsored post for Vistaprint Deals. All opinions are my own. And I DO use Vistaprint Deals when I buy Vistaprint business cards and checks!

There Are So Many Different Shaving Kits For Men!

Christmas wore me out.

Not physically, but mentally. Trying to figure out what to get everyone, trying to remember what everyone likes, needs, everyone's differences... mental fatigue set in. I finally managed to get all my shopping done, and I was pretty contented with the purchases I'd made. I only had one person left to buy for....

I had no idea what to get Hubby for Christmas. I mean, I'd gotten him the Ryobi Reciprocating Saw that he wanted (more on that later), but it came early, and he happened to see it. I couldn't very well make him wait until Christmas to play with it, so I let him keep it. That meant I had nothing to give him on Christmas. That somehow just didn't seem fair.

I decided on a shaving kit, but there are so many different shaving kits for men! I suppose that's a good thing, since it means you could find exactly what the person you are buying for would like. I looked at a lot of shaving kits that already had the razors and the products in the kit. I also looked at a lot of different components and thought about putting together a personalized kit just for Hubby.

Hubby Shaving
Hubby Shaving with a disposable razor.

Men now-days are not so opposed to using skin products as they used to be. Hubby will even use products I give him, if I tell him how good I think they smell, or how nice they make his skin feel. Still, he has to like the way those products smell too, since he has to wear them all day. I know certain perfumes give me headaches, and I'd hate to get something and it cause him problems like that.

So, I opted to get him some shirts (that he needed), and a couple of pairs of long-john bottoms. He likes to wear them when he goes hunting, since it gets really cold in the deer blind (lol!). I'm thinking I will get him a nice shaving kit for his birthday. I still am not sure whether I'll get one that is already set up, or if I will purchase the items seperately and put them all in a nice travel case. Either way, I'll pick up some little samples for him to try out, so I can get a better idea of what he really wants, before I go spend all that money!

How do you feel about shaving kits for men - as a gift?

This is a sponsored post. The ideas and opinions are all my own. My husband DID get a Ryobi Reciprocating Saw and I AM thinking about getting him a shaving kit from The Art of Shaving for his birthday.

Sears Holiday #styleSurprise Sweepstakes

Wow! Right now Sears Shop Your Way has the  #styleSurprise Sweepstakes going on, where you can win $5K worth of SYW reward points to spend however you wish! Crazy right?

I sure could use that many points right now. I've been sitting here thinking about what I would do with that $5000 in points if I won it. New exercise equipment? New clothes? Shoes for the boys? Tools for Hubby? I don't know about you, but five thousand dollars is a lot of money to me!! I don't know that I would know where to start! Oh, ok, first I'd start with clothes, because I need them so much. I'm always buying for everyone else first, and my closet is starting to show the neglect. Then I'm sure I'd choose something for each of the boys, and something for hubby. And probably get me a stationary bike - to try to work my big behind into a smaller more compact version of itself. But! The clothes for myself would HAVE to come first...

Just look at this gorgeous Kardashian Kollection Women's Blue Leopard Night High-Low Maxi dress!
Is your closet in the same shape as mine? Visit Sears for more everyday fashion inspiration!

Have you seen this commercial? I would love it if everyone asked me 'Where did you get that dress/shoes/jewelry/etc!!! Go enter the Sweepstakes to try to win the $5000 in ShopYourWay points for yourself!!

This is a sponsored post. I am a Sears blogger, though all opinions are my own.

Funny Things Happen on #Connecting Flights

The airport holds a lot of wonderful memories for me.When I was little, my father traveled for a living. We were always taking him to the airport or going there to pick him up. Airports were WAYYY different back then than they are now. Anyone could go back and watch their loved ones board the plane. My dad would always buy my brother and I candy, and we would watch the planes land and take off out of the huge glass walls that overlooked the runway.

Have you seen how many people pass through an airport on any given day? I used to imagine stories about all the passengers sitting in the seats, waiting for their flights. I wondered where they had been, where they were going and what they had seen. Can you imagine two people meeting up in an airport, and falling in love?

This new movie, sponsored by Sears, looks like it will be another classic Christmas movie. I know I can hardly wait to see it!

This is a sponsored post, I am a Sears blogger, however ALL opinions are my own.

How To Avoid Back Pain

I have had a bad back since I was in my late thirty's. I worked on a production line, putting together frozen drink machines. One day, I picked up on the end of one (like I had every day before) and pulled my back. I hurt so badly I could hardly move. Thank goodness I had good insurance through the company! They sent me to their doctor, who promptly put me on bed rest, muscle relaxers and pain killers. I was out of work for two weeks. If workman's comp had not paid me, I would not have made it. Back pain can be disabling!

If you want to avoid this kind of problem, there are several things you can do. Many doctors will tell you it is easier to prevent back pain than it is to successfully treat it after it happens.

  • Exercise - conditioning and strengthening exercises can help to prevent back pain. Make sure you include stretching exercises or the other two wont mean anything!
  • Posture - If you have good posture (ears, shoulders, hips, knees, all aligned) you are less likely to have back pain.
  • Sleep - Get good sleep on a good mattress. If you find you are having back pain in the mornings, try sleeping in a different position at night.
  • Nix the high heels. I know! This is a hard one for all you fashion forward women out there! High heels are terrible for your back! If you must wear them, do it for short periods of time. You know you'll only dance one or two songs in them anyway!! LOL!
  • Diet - Eat healthy, and try not to pack on extra weight. Being overweight puts strain on your back and knees!
One you have hurt your back, it is easier for it to happen again. Follow your doctors suggestions, and once you are well, if you follow the suggestions above you can avoid another mishap. If you have never hurt your back, start now to secure a healthier future!

This is a sponsored post from Healthy Back. All opinions are my own - so take care of your back!

Gettin' Old...

This week has worn me out. I took the boys and my oldest daughter and her four children to a movie screening Tuesday night. I stayed that night with my daughter and then the boys and I came home Wednesday. I volunteer at a church unloading a Food Bank truck, helping box it all up, and pass it out to the people. I do it twice a month, and Thursday happened to be a 'truck day'. So, the boys and I spent the biggest part of Thursday volunteering. Friday, we drove into Bryan, to get feed. Yes, it's been a busy week.

Lately, busy weeks like this seem to come more and more often. Lately, they seem to wear me out a lot quicker. Maybe it's because I'm 50. Yeah, this summer I'll be rolling down the other side of that proverbial 'hill' that everyone goes over. One day a few years back, I found myself researching retirement homes, just to check them out. My grandparents lived in their own home until my grandfather passed away. My grandmother opted to move into an assisted living apartment. She lived to be 99 yrs old.

I'm not quite ready for any of that. I've always told the boys that when I die I want to be cremated, and I want them to bury my ashes under the big old oak tree out in the back pasture. Now, I know it won't happen. The old oak fell a couple of weeks ago in the high winds of the thunderstorm that blew through. It wouldn't bother me in the least though, wherever they scatter my ashes. Like my Daddy used to tell me when I was little, when you die you go to heaven, and your body is like a peanut shell. The peanut (your soul) is gone. It doesn't matter what happens to the shell. Whatever happens until then, I'm sure I'll live my days out right here on the farm. Life is good here, even when I have a hectic week.

And...Summer Break Begins

Thursday at noon, the boys are officially on Summer Break. There will be no peace in our house for the next three months.

If I had the money, I would take them on some kind of a summer trip. Someplace they would really enjoy, like Florida and DisneyWorld, or Universal Studios in California.

Heck, if I had the money I'd take them to the Bahamas where we could sit on the beach and just relax. I know that's kind of crazy. Especially since we have Galveston beaches so very close.
The boys at the beach...five years ago, lol!

The thing is, no matter where you choose to vacation, when you have a family, there are so many things you have to consider. If we took a big vacation, my boys would need some new clothes, because I don't want people to see them in the ratty jeans they would wear for just hanging around the farm. I'd have to get a full prescription of their meds too. They would need them to be able to sit still on a plane without aggravating every passenger flying. Taking a trip in the car means several stops, just to let them run around and stretch so they wont drive ME crazy on the ride! Then there is food when you get there. My boys are not picky, but I really wouldn't want them eating restaurant food every day. We'd have to have a room with a kitchenette so I could cook a few meals here and there. Of course, you can't go on vacation and not get souvenirs! The boys would want to bring back half the park! Whew! Yeah, it sounds like more work to go on vacation than it does to stay at home. Not to mention the money. I just don't think there is any such thing as cheap holidays!

We'll stay home this summer. We'll go to the zoo. We'll try to go to one or two of the museums. We'll hit the parks, and maybe let them do some 'camping' out in the back pasture. Seems to be the sanest (and cheapest) way to do it this year. Hey, maybe we'll go spend a weekend at the beach.

Bucket List Countries on A Charter Jet

I'll be turning 51 this year, so, while I don't plan on kicking the bucket anytime soon, I thought it might be time to entertain the idea of a bucket list. I know some of my much younger friends have them, so I thought it can't be a bad idea.

I don't know that I have that many things to put on that bucket list. I know one of those things would be to visit some of the places I've wanted to visit since I was little. Places like Ireland, Germany, Stonehenge, and Loch Ness. Why those specific places? Well, they are 'fairytale' places. Mystical places full of magic and fairy dust. I loved reading about King Arthur and the knights of the Round Table, princesses, fairies, trolls and hobbits when I was growing up. Being a grown up now, I'd like to see the places in which those stories were set. Places where castles rise out of a cloud of fog, and fairy folk dance in open fields.  Ok, so there is a possibility that fairies don't dance in the open fields of Ireland, but the child in me would like to hold on to that scene!

I want to see Nessie swim in Loch Ness, or at least spend a few days on the banks of the beautiful place, searching for any ripple that could be her! I want to feel the coolness of the stones of Stonehenge, and see that mystic circle in the fog of early morning, just like I've seen it in so many movies! You know, I'd like to see Machu Picchu too.

Now, seeing as these beautiful, magical places are all on different continents, of course I would have to fly to see them. Since it's my bucket list, I think that I would want to take a charter plane service to visit all these places. I see no reason why I shouldn't travel in the utmost comfort. Right? I mean, a princess should travel in style!

This is a sponsored post for Clear Jet, however, all the points and views are my own.

Local Online Marketing or Other Advertisment?

My daughter has been making cakes for a very long time. She makes the most wonderful cakes - some I stand in extreme awe of. Some of the cakes she has made, I think belong in a cake magazine! Take this Lightening McQueen cake that she made. There is no fondant involved in this cake. This is all icing/frosting and a knife. See what I mean? She absolutely rocks with cakes!

I told her she should sell them. I knew she could make a good amount of money just making cakes for other people. She really played with the idea for a while, and after several people told her they would pay her, she decided to try. She worked very hard and sold several for birthday parties to people she knew. Then things started to slow down. She started thinking about advertising. I told her she could try local online marketing, or just getting some business cards made up and passing them around. She decided she would just try the business cards first. If that doesn't work, she may go the other route. She just has to put a little money aside first, to pay for everything. I know if we can get the word out, once people see what beautiful work she does, she will be set.

Do you have a special talent you are good at? Do you market it, or make gifts for special people? Let me know! You all know I crochet! I'd love to hear about your talents!

Driving OTR - Experiencing America

Do you like to travel? I do. I don't get much chance anymore, but when I was young, I would travel with my dad in the summers. He was a traveling salesman. While young and foolish I fell in love with a guy who wanted to be a truck driver like his father, and we talked about seeing the United States, until we decided to have children. I will say, for reasons I will keep to myself, I am glad I was not foolish enough to pursue that dream. He didn't pursue that dream either, for what difference it makes...lol.

My brother recently decided it was the right choice for him, and he went to school to be an OTR driver. I think he really enjoys being on the road, seeing different places in the U.S., and getting paid to do it! He really enjoyed the training, and would call me from different places on the road. When he came through Houston, he would call me and I would go pick him up. It gave us the chance to have lunch and spend some time together, before he had to be on the road again. This is something we would not be able to do if he were not driving. He has talked about checking out some of the commercial trucks for sale but hasn't really made the commitment yet. I think he would rather find some local driving in Oklahoma, so he could stay close enough to see his boys a little more often!

I do miss traveling, but the boys will be grown soon, and I am hoping Hubby and I can do a little more of it after they have gone on to live their own lives! Besides, I'd rather be in our RV than an 18 wheeler anyway!

Ahh, Las Vegas Weddings...

What happens in Las Vegas, Stays in Las Vegas. Or so they say! This may be true for many, many things, but weddings follow you wherever you go, whether done in Las Vegas or anywhere else!

There are so many pros and cons that go with a Las Vegas wedding.

If you've been dating a while, and you don't really want to go the big expensive family style (circus), you can go to Vegas and get married, quick and easy, and have a very nice honeymoon too. Well, I guess if you like to gamble it might not be so cheap. LOL! However, if you think about the money you would have spent on a big wedding, and you don't gamble too much, you might come out ok!

My youngest daughter got married in Vegas. She brought her own dress, but she said they did have dresses you could rent. I asked her if they had an Elvis impersonator for the chaplain and she said no, but they could have if they had wanted! I think that is a little far fetched, but, to each his own, I guess.

The cons about Vegas weddings are that many people get married on the spur of the moment, without really thinking about the seriousness of it. It's more of a dare, or a joke. Marriage is a serious commitment in my opinion. It's not something to be taken lightly, or rushed into. My daughter and her first husband had been together for a while when they married. They only went to Vegas to do it, because they had never been, and thought it would be a nice honeymoon. Even that didn't make the marriage last. So, before you rush off to Vegas to get married, think about your life, and relationship. Then, if it's really what you want, go have a great time!

I am participating in a blogger campaign by Bucks2Blog for a Las Vegas Wedding Chapel and was compensated for this post. The views and opinions expressed are all my own, and are not influenced in any way by the sponsor.

Are You Afraid Of The Dentist?

Everyone I know is afraid of the dentist. I have to admit, I have reservations myself, but I am grown up enough to know they are there to help us, not to hurt us. I will say that, as long as they give me gas, I have no problem with any work they need to do. Now, I know I hear someone snickering...I don't mean that kind of gas. I mean laughing gas. Once they put me under that, I fall asleep and am oblivious to whatever they do.

When my youngest daughter's wisdom teeth started giving her trouble, she called me on the phone. I told her she needed to see a dentist and have them removed. We went through all the reservations she had, and ultimately she understood that if she didn't have them pulled she would just remain in pain. We made an appointment for them to be removed.

This is a picture of her after she had them removed. Some of that is packing, and some of it is swelling! Bless her heart! She did finally admit to me that she had been entirely too scared of what would happen at the dentist. They are no longer someone to be feared. Modern medicine and technology have made so many advances that now it's almost pain free to visit the dentist. They can do so much now too. There are even some fantastic alternatives to dentures! Don't let the dentist frighten you. Dentists everywhere are equipped to give you whatever help you need, even dentists in Nashville TN have ways to make your smile it's very best.
